Andrew Little Releases Infrastructure Plan

Wellington mayoral candidate Andrew Little has today released his infrastructure plan, with commitments to deliver clear expectations to Metro Water, make public transport faster through greater bus priority, and secure a Wellington Regional Deal.

Andrew Little says rebuilding Wellington's infrastructure is the foundation for creating a more vibrant, affordable city where people want to live and businesses can thrive.

"Good infrastructure is how we get the homes we need, with transport options that get people where they need to go, when they need to get there, and water services that deliver value for money and remain affordable for families.

"This plan builds on what's already working well: our public transport system, our walkable central city and our strong local neighbourhoods. But it's also honest about the challenges we face - years of poor decision-making have left our infrastructure crumbling, and with the council's tight finances, every infrastructure dollar needs to work harder and deliver results.

"The transition to Metro Water presents both an opportunity and a risk. Done well, it could deliver the water upgrades our city desperately needs. Done poorly, it could saddle residents with unaffordable cost increases.

"Given the scale of investment required to get our water infrastructure up to standard, Wellingtonians will inevitably face a price shock as water bills start to arrive. That's why we need strong governance structures and clear accountability from day one, to keep that cost as low as possible."

Andrew Little’s policy includes:

  • Clear accountability for Metro Water on delivery and affordability

  • Increasing bus priority to make public transport faster and more reliable

  • Working across the region and with Government to get a Wellington Regional Deal

  • Working with Government on reforms to ease pressure on owners of earthquake-prone buildings

  • Protecting public assets such as the Council’s stake in Wellington Airport

"This infrastructure plan works hand-in-hand with my housing policy to create more homes in places close to public transport and good public spaces. By prioritising water investments in key residential development areas and creating better transport corridors, we're laying the groundwork for the compact, higher-density development Wellington needs.

"When we get infrastructure right - faster buses, reliable water services, and strategic investment in growth areas - we create the conditions for a city where young people can afford their first home, families don't have to choose between rent and groceries, and businesses can attract talent because people can actually afford to live here.

"These are complex challenges that require working constructively with central government, mana whenua and regional partners. My experience in these environments means I can help get the best deal for Wellington and ensure our city's voice is heard."
